Recently, I was so lucky to have the chance to interview Kelly Robinson-Key, an author and illustrator who has recently self-published her first children’s picture book Henry The Hula Hooping Hippo.
Check out our chat below where she discusses all things writing, inspiration and future plans.
Hi Kelly, I hope you are well. Let’s commence the interview.
Please tell my readers a bit about yourself and your work.
My name is Kelly Robinson-Key, I am a children’s author, that is inspired by my two beautiful children. I am originally from Essex but now live in the picturesque South Wales. I own KRK Prints where I sell my rhymes and illustration as prints and on organic clothing. I also own a woodworking business where we make signs and shelving out of reclaimed wood.
What gave you the inspiration behind your first published picture book?
I started Hula Hooping around 3 years ago but felt embarrassed about doing it in front of anyone. This made me feel quite sad as I thought about my children and how I would never want them to feel embarrassed to do something that they love. Also, for many years I have been told not to do something as it wouldn’t be a good idea, or it isn’t the norm. I don’t want any child to feel that they can’t do something because someone has told them it’s not a good idea. Always do what you love, no matter what others think.
Who is your new book aimed at and why?
It is aimed at children between the ages of 2 and 7. Anyone can enjoy Henry The Hula Hooping Hippo, but I think these ages will get the most from it. I am hoping they learn to have courage from this book.
Do you have any sneak peaks of the book that I can share with my readers?
When did you begin writing?
I thought that I began writing around 3 years ago. But I recently came across a book that I wrote when I was 10, and some rhymes that I wrote as a teenager, so I am guessing that I have always enjoyed it. Since having my children I started to write properly as I struggled to find stories about courage and helping the environment.
Do you prefer writing or creating cards/clothes more?
Writing is my passion. I can write 30 rhymes a day, although I delete most, then keep what I like. But I love adding them to prints, cards, and clothes as it is wonderful to see customers enjoying my work in different ways.
What do you have planned in the future?
My daughter starts full time school in January, so from then I will have plenty of time to work on my writing. I have several books that I am working on. One is called ‘The Little Book Of Positivity’, this is a small book full of positive rhymes. I won’t be profiting from this book, customers will just pay for printing and shipping. I wanted to provide a book where someone can rip their favourite rhyme from this book and place it in their purse or in their phone. The when they feel like they need some positivity or encouragement they can just get it out and have a look. I just want to spread happiness and positivity.
What makes your work different to others?
Oh what an interesting question. I think because I want to fill my writing with positivity and encouragement to bring on passion and happiness to my readers. I write, not just for young children or adults to enjoy, but to give them something that will stay with them for life.
Is there anything else you would like to share with my readers?
